The Richmond Times-Dispatch has the latest and greatest from the newly-released Quinnipiac poll:

In potential head-to-head match-ups, Perriello tops Gillespie by 43 percent to 36 percent; Wagner by 43 percent to 32 percent; Stewart by 44 percent to 31 percent and Riggleman by 43 percent to 30 percent.

Northam tops Gillespie by 41 percent to 35 percent; Wagner by 41 percent to 33 percent; Stewart by 42 percent to 31 percent and Riggleman by 42 percent to 31 percent.

Quinnipiac surveyed 989 Virginia voters between Feb. 10-15. The survey has a margin of error of plus or minus 3.1 percentage points.

The RTD’s Jeff Schapiro has a rather interesting video overview of the entire race… which after some years, the RTD finally seems to be getting right.

The question remains whether or not 2017 is shaping up to be the Democrats’ version of 2009, or whether the Northam/Perriello fisticuffs will result in a Republican version of 2013 — especially after Perriello’s thoughtless comparison of the election of Trump as a liberal 9/11; a Periello “macaca” moment if there ever was one.

Given the fracas that has become the lieutenant governor’s nomination contest and the furor (too soon?) Trump has created within the Republican base nationwide, it is becoming more and more clear that something has to give within a GOP base that not only doesn’t seem energized, but does not appear to want to be energized for any particular candidate just yet.

Of course, it all came together after the 2016 nomination for the Republicans… and Republicans fall in line while Democrats fall in love, after all.  Question is, after a bruising Democratic gubernatorial contest, will that happen?

If Gillespie’s bid for governor is mimicking Allen’s 2012 primary bid by the numbers, then it stands to reason that — despite the mess at the moment — that a consistent conservative message will emerge that will galvanize the ticket.  Whatever that message is, it will have to be better than Northam’s steady and calm demeanor or Perriello’s tech-savvy approach that appeals to les indivisibles.

Les grognards such as yours truly remain quite reserved in their enthusiasm… at least, for the moment.
